About NPW

Generations of prayer

I have had many faithful prayer warriors in my life that have led me to this place in time.  I have a beautiful heritage of believers on both sides of my family and am so thankful for the prayers of those who have gone before me.   I want to honor their commitment and pass on the high calling we have in Christ.  I pray the heart-felt awareness of what a privilege it is to communicate with our Creator will continue for generations to come.

The backstory

My great grandfather Abraham Vereide started the National Prayer Breakfast in Washington, DC in 1953. His life and legacy have been a consistent inspiration of how God can take the actions of a faithful servant to do amazing things.   Abraham Vereide immigrated from Norway in 1905 and became a minister at the age of 20 in Montana.  He began his ministry in Seattle, WA with small groups of men meeting each week over breakfast for prayer. He continued this ministry in Washington DC with businessmen and politicians, simply meeting each week to pray.

My grandmother Alicia Abrahamsen continued his ministry of prayer and traveled worldwide speaking to women’s groups about the faithfulness of God and encouraging them in their walk with Jesus.  My mother, Gretha has continued the deeply held heritage of prayer and always modeled the power of conversing with the Lord in everyday life and in all situations.  She taught me that prayer is our greatest weapon.  I was blessed being brought up in a Christian home where I was encouraged to have a personal relationship with Christ.

My paternal grandparents, Thomas and Harriett, planted a church in our local community and my grandmother was a preacher and faithful interceder.  I remember as a young girl staying the night at her house and seeing her on her knees early in the morning crying out to God on behalf of her family.  She is known amongst family for the unique issue of wearing holes in the tops of her slippers from praying on her knees each and every day.  Her life and love for her Lord formed a firm foundation of prayer in my life which she passionately demonstrated and imparted to her entire family, including my father Thomas.

Why start NPW?

When considering how the Lord could use me in our current culture, I felt led to take the concept of weekly prayer meetings started by my great-grandfather and pair that with current technology to unite believers to join in prayer together wherever they are, thereby multiplying corporate intercession. I feel as believers, we are all looking for a way to have an impact in this cultural moment and what better way than to join together and flood the heavens with our praises and our petitions.

“Generations are eternally linked through the common thread of faith. As we join one another each week, may we weave together the blessing of generational prayer with a vision for the important role
we each play in impacting our future.”

I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people, and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is the same as the mighty strength he exerted when he raised Christ from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every name that is invoked, not only in the present age but also in the one to come.
